The most commonly used materials are <\/span><b>graphite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>PTFE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>stainless steels or nickel-based alloys. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Juntas_planas_de_grafito\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphite flat gaskets<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>graphite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the following advantages:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Economical price<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Up to 450\u00ba C for fluids and for steam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the maximum temperature is 650\u00ba C. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it raises the problem that <\/span><b>does not have good chemical resistance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against oxidizing media and can adhere to its housing, <strong>making it difficult to maintain the equipment<\/strong>. Graphite is the preferred filler material for spiral wound gaskets although it can also be used as a flat gasket with a stainless steel metal insert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6684\" src=\"https:\/\/epidor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Juntas-planas-para-valvulas-Epidor-SRT-2.jpg\" alt=\"Flat gaskets for Epidor SRT 2 valves\" width=\"600\" height=\"348\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Juntas_planas_de_PTPE\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTPE flat gaskets<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>PTFE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enjoys a<\/span><b> almost universal chemical resistance <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but its service temperature is limited to +260 \u00baC. In addition, the material <\/span><b>suffers creep <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the nominal joint thickness is not maintained) and has a coefficient of expansion that should not be underestimated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the two limitations, creep is by far the more serious. To overcome this, there is a variant of the <\/span><b>PTFE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which involves a mechanical treatment (calendering) that significantly corrects the creep of the <\/span><b>PTFE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> virgin. It is the \u00a0<\/span><b>Gylon<\/b><b>\u00ae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PTFE, the restructured PTFE of <\/span><b>Garlock<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, The third generation of this material is now being marketed. This material is characterized by its excellent behavior against steam, the gasket does not stick to the housing and has no difficulty to be cut from sheets. In the coming weeks we will be presenting in our blog the 3rd generation of <\/span><b>Gylon<\/b><b>\u00ae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6685 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/epidor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Juntas-planas-para-valvulas-Epidor-SRT-3.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For valves with spiral wound seals that are subject to vibration or when the temperature or pressure is very high, it is recommended that the seal be replaced by a <\/span><b>grooved metal gasket<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, type Kammprofile. However, another more interesting option to that of spline wear, is that of the <\/span><b>corrugated and flexible metal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, capable of absorbing movements. The gasket can also have a graphite coating that copies the flange but is recommended for use in oxidizing media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manufacturer <\/span><b>Revoseal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has patented a graphite-filled corrugated metal gasket that, once assembled, encapsulates the graphite and acts as a secondary seal.
