Currently, more than 32 synthetic elastomers or rubbers are known. Thus, for example, a certain NBR formulation cannot be expected to maintain its high chemical resistance to lubricants and, at the same time, improve its behavior at low temperature. An elastomer formulation contains, among other additives, the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vulcanization accelerators.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pigments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stabilizers against aging caused by sunlight, ozone, weathering...<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plasticizers that improve flexibility and reduce brittleness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flame-retardant, flame-retardant, antistatic agents...<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filler fillers that only increase the density of the formulation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the formulation is designed, a Banbury-type mixer is fed with a bar of the base polymer, e.g., fluoroelastomer, and the various additives are added to it.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The Banbury mixer consists of two smooth rollers, facing each other and rotating in opposite directions, mixing the formulation components. After a certain time has elapsed, the<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The mixing operation is completed and the desired formulation is obtained. This formulation, which does not yet have the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">elasticity of an elastomer, it is called a \u201craw\u201d mixture.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crude mixture is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stored at controlled temperature until consumption. It can be reserved as a block or extruded as an o-ring or tape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11892\" src=\"https:\/\/epidor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/64-Metodos-de-Fabricacion-04-12-19-Foto-INTERIOR-01.jpg\" width=\"726\" height=\"592\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Segunda_etapa_Procesamiento_de_la_pieza\"><\/span>Second stage: Processing of the part<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection or compression molding<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For both techniques, the process is essentially the same. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The elastomer is placed in a hot mold and pressed. It is then cooled and the \u201cmolded\u201d part is removed.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, for large quantities and relatively small sizes, injection molding is preferably used. For small quantities and yet small sizes, injection molding is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compression molding is chosen.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Profile extrusion, profile cutting <\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and subsequent bonding by vulcanization or gluing.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The elastomer pellets are fed into an electrically heated extruder that melts and compacts the elastomer along the screw to be ejected through a nozzle or die. The diameters of the nozzles are variable as well as their geometries.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machining<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By machining a bar or tube from the material of interest with a lathe or CNC. The bar is clamped to a chuck while a tool removes material until the desired part is obtained. It is an interesting option when small quantities are desired, since there is no mold cost in this case.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several technologies, each with its own advantages (knife, waterjet, laser, die, guillotine), which use as raw material semi-finished products in the form of raw material sheets already vulcanized, or profiles in the case of the guillotine.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotomolding<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sometimes artisanal technique, in which the mold is immersed in a bath of liquid raw material. The shapes obtained can only be symmetrical, and it is particularly used in the manufacture of bellows in small series.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tercera_etapa_Vulcanizacion_y_post-curado\"><\/span>Third stage: Vulcanization and post-curing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the raw mixture to be elastic, a chemical reaction called \u201cvulcanization\u201d, \u201ccuring\u201d or \u201ccross-linking\u201d must take place under certain conditions of pressure and temperature. This is an irreversible chemical process. For this, a reaction catalyst is added to the mixture, which can be an organic peroxide, metal oxides or a sulfur-releasing compound whose vulcanization is known as \u201csulfur curing\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bridges are created between the long polymeric chains, and the rubber then becomes<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">s elastic and resistant, returning to its original shape after deformation. A<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">l <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since this is a slow reaction, the process can be continued in autoclaves, and the following are used <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">accelerators in mixtures to improve manufacturing yields.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final hardness of the formulation is variable and is adjusted depending on the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s reaction conditions. After the curing reaction, a more<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is now elastic and responds to the elastomer formulation.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11893\" src=\"https:\/\/epidor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/64-Metodos-de-Fabricacion-04-12-19-Foto-INTERIOR-02.jpg\" width=\"726\" height=\"594\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of molding, vulcanization is part of the process and takes place <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the same <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">act of molding.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">In extrusion, on the other hand, the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vulcanization is a post-treatment of the vulcanization process itself.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">extrusion. It can be carried out in some type of tunnel\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immediately downstream of the extruder or in autoclaves with the previously extruded material.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of cutting and machining, already vulcanized semi-finished products are used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cuarta_etapa_Acabado_superficial\"><\/span>Fourth stage: Surface finishing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain manufacturing systems, such as molding, which is the most commonly used, can generate certain burrs or material remains in the parts in areas of mold joints, core insertion in complex molds or remains of injection ducts.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the geometry of the finished product, its material and tolerances, we will use different deburring systems, such as manual, cryogenic or mechanical deburring.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subsequently, a number of additional processes can be applied, depending on the application, such as parts cleaning or surface treatment (see our blog post: <a style=\"color: #1e73be;\" href=\"https:\/\/epidor-srt.com\/blog\/juntas-toricas-acabados-superficiales-alto-rendimiento\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">O-rings: high-performance surface finishes<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Epidor SRT usa tecnolog\u00eda de vanguardia para la mecanizaci\u00f3n de piezas a partir de dollas de elast\u00f3mero, planchas o materia prima \u201cen crudo\u201d.
