Leaks or gradual losses of product that occur through different equipment or components. These are the <\/span><b>emissions more difficult to quantify<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, detect and correct.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no single definition of fugitive emissions, due to the fact that<\/span><b> there is no single type of fugitive emission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, emissions, nor is there a single way to quantify them.  This depends very much on the environment in which these emissions are found. These are mainly due to human industrial activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20146\" src=\"https:\/\/epidor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SRT_202211_Resumen_Webinar_emisiones_fugitivas_BLOG-Interior_QueSon_836px.jpg\" alt=\"fugitive emissions\" width=\"836\" height=\"380\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of issue makes up a <\/span><b>total of 5% of gas emissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> greenhouse gas emissions, which is a significant amount and has a major impact on the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"anchor3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legislacion_sobre_emisiones_fugitivas\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legislation on fugitive emissions<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is necessary to take into account the importance in the Spanish and European territory to have a regulation and quantification of the fugitive emissions that are carried, by the industry, to the terrestrial atmosphere. And so,<\/span><b> to be able to enhance and limit them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some regulations that must be taken into account when dealing with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>- SEI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish System of Inventory of Emissions to the Atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>- Sectoral DR \/ BATs or MTDs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>- AAI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrated Environmental Authorization.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"anchor4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causas_y_factores\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes and factors<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fugitive emissions are unavoidable, but they must be prevented from occurring at <\/span><b>large quantities and try to reduce them as much as possible.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To do this, it is essential to start by knowing the causes and factors that provoke them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor5\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causas_que_provocan_las_emisiones_fugitivas\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes leading to fugitive emissions<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fugitive emissions can arise from a variety of causes. Some of them are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>- Wear and tear of the work equipment or its components<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The leakage of watertightness, which leads to leaks in different spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>- Design, construction, use or installation of equipment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>- An equipment error or failure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can cause them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it may seem an insignificant amount, small leaks in an installation can end up becoming significant. These are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Equipment design<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Age and quality of equipment\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Installation standards\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Fluid vapor pressure\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Process pressure and temperature\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Number and type of sources\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Maintenance and inspection routines\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Production volume\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"anchor7\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Costes_asociados\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associated costs<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we talk about costs caused by fugitive emissions, the most worrying ones are those related to the<\/span><b> impact on the environment and human health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but, in addition to these, there are the economic costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the visible costs and the invisible costs:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- The <\/span><b>visible costs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are those related to the loss of obvious material.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- The <\/span><b>invisible costs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relate to those costs that are indirectly generated by fugitive emissions. An example is the labor required for detection and repair, <\/span><b>the odors and nuisances they generate with the loss of product or the costs of cleanup and even fines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">... that they can cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20134\" src=\"https:\/\/epidor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SRT_202211_Resumen_Webinar_emisiones_fugitivas_BLOG-Interior_Calculo_836px.jpg\" alt=\"fugitive emissions\" width=\"836\" height=\"380\" \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"anchor8\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Emisiones_COVNM\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NMVOC emissions\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NMVOCs, i.e. emissions of Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds, refer to <\/span><b>compounds that can become highly toxic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Products that contribute to global warming in a significant way and damage atmospheric ozone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These emissions are significant, since, taking 2019 as a reference year, they came to be accounted for with <\/span><b>583,000 tons, of which, 48% came from the industry.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"anchor9\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tecnicas_para_prevenirlas_y_reducirlas\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Techniques to prevent and reduce them\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are a matter of concern for the industry. For this reason, <\/span><b>techniques have been researched and selected to avoid them.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are some of the most important <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eippcb.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/es\/reference\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available minimization measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is absolutely necessary to use <\/span><b>high performance sealing systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- High performance flanges and gaskets<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Quality and high integrity valves and pumps<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Low emissivity gaskets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, it is recommended to establish<\/span><b> a leak detection and repair program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with, for example, valve monitoring or results analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"anchor10\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Normativas_ISO_y_TA-LUFT\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISO and TA-LUFT standards<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"anchor11\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EN_ISO_15848-1\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EN ISO 15848-1<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the problem with this type of emissions, the ISO standard is developed to deal with fugitive emissions in industrial valves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EN ISO 15848-1 defines the procedures for measuring, testing and qualifying fugitive emissions in industrial valves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor12\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TA-LUFT\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TA-LUFT<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This regulation, which originated in Germany, <\/span><b>The reduction of pollutants emitted by industrial plants is fully addressed.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The regulation, which has been in force in Germany since 1974, has been revised and will come into force in 2021 at the European level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This regulation presents a list of fluids that are hazardous to the environment or to humans.
